About our Multidisciplinary Team

At the Institute for Advanced Reconstructive Surgery, Monmouth Medical Center plastic surgeon Andrew Elkwood, M.D., leads a highly skilled multidisciplinary team of surgeons on the cutting edge of reconstructive surgery. This team of surgeons trained in advanced plastic, ophthalmic, otolaryngologic (ear, nose and throat) and maxillofacial procedures work together to offer hope to patients with devastating deformities.

 

Andrew I. Elkwood, M.D.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Monmouth Medical Center

Andrew I. Elkwood, M.D., received his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University. He completed a residency in general surgery at the New York University Medical Center, where he later completed a training program in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, he has published numerous articles and has given several lectures to the medical community. Among his special honors and achievements, Dr. Elkwood is an associate member of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Stephen A. Chidyllo, M.D., DDS, FACS

Stephen A. Chidyllo, M.D., DDS, FACS, received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. At the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dentistry, he received a doctorate of dental surgery. After completing a residency in general surgery at the New York Infirmary-Beekman Downtown Hospital, he went on to complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Chicago/Cook County Hospitals. He completed a plastic surgery fellowship in the fields of cranio-maxillofacial surgery and reconstructive and cosmetic facial surgery at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine.

An attending surgeon at Monmouth, Dr. Chidyllo was appointed as clinical associate Professor of surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. He has published multiple articles in the fields of plastic surgery, surgery and dentistry. Dr. Chidyllo has made many presentations in the field of plastic surgery both nationally and regionally, with expertise in the field of cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery. A diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, his professional affiliations include the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetics Plastic Surgery, the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Chidyllo has served as committee chairman for the craniomaxillofacial sub-committee of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation and the National Board of Medical Examiners.


Peter T. Hetzler, M.D., FACS
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Monmouth Medical Center

Peter T. Hetzler, M.D., FACS, received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in general surgery as the chief resident, and a residency in plastic reconstructive surgery as the chief resident, at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University. He went on to complete a fellowship in aesthetic plastic surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, and a fellowship in microsurgery at the York Hospital Trauma Center.
Currently an attending surgeon at Monmouth, Dr. Hetzler is board certified in general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery. He has published several articles and has given multiple presentations to the medical community.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of professional medical organizations including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is the president-elect of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgery, and a member of the multidisciplinary breast cancer evaluation committee at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center.

Among his special honors and achievements, Dr. Hetzler was named in the April 1996 New Jersey Magazine article, ‘Top Doctors in New Jersey.’ Since 1999, he has been named in the Castle-Connolly Guide, ‘How to Find the Best New York Metro Area Doctors.’

Louis M. Iorio, M.D.

Louis M. Iorio, M.D., received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. After completing a residency in general surgery as the chief resident at the State University of New York, he went on to complete a fellowship in plastic surgery at Nassau County Medical Center.

Board certified in both plastic and general surgery, he specializes in the latest cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr. Iorio is an attending surgeon at Monmouth and a member of professional medical societies such as the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Ronald W. Kristan, M.D., FACS

Ronald W. Kristan, M.D., FACS, received his medical degree from New York University. Upon completing a residency in ophthalmology at Albany Medical Center, he remained there to complete his subspecialty fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Kristan has been an attending surgeon at Monmouth since 1985 and is a member of the Day Stay Task Force. In 1995, he was a part of Monmouth’s Mission Cataract program, which allowed those unable to access medical care to have cataract surgery performed.

A diplomate of the Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgery, Dr. Kristan is certified in cataract and implant surgery. He is a member of many professional medical organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Eye Surgeons, the American College of Ocularists, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, he has published several articles and has delivered numerous presentations to the medical community.

Among his special honors and achievements, Dr. Kristan has worked on developing laser intracanalicular surgery for lacrimal obstruction. He performed some of the earliest cases of this kind in the United States, and is involved with teaching these surgical techniques nationally and internationally. Dr. Kristan is a past president of the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, where he is still an active member.

Anthony S. Lombardi, M.D., P.C.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Anthony S. Lombardi, M.D., P.C., received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Medical School. Upon completing his residency in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center, he returned to New Jersey Medical School to complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

An attending surgeon at Monmouth, Dr. Lombardi is board certified in general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery. He has been working with the ‘Healing the Children Foundation’ since 1990, and has delivered several presentations to the medical community. Dr. Lombardi is a member of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Residents Affiliate Group. He has been published in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Steven B. Norwitz, M.D., FACS

Steven B. Norwitz, M.D., FACS, received his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. After completing his residency in general surgery at the State University of New York Kings County Downstate Medical Center, he remained there to complete his residency in plastic surgery as the chief resident.

Dr. Norwitz is board certified in plastic surgery and is a clinical instructor at Drexel University College of Medicine. He has delivered numerous lectures and has written and presented several papers concerning his field of expertise. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, his professional affiliations include the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Lipoplasty Society of North America.

Michael D. Rosen, M.D.

Michael D. Rosen, M.D., received his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine. Upon completing his residency in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center as the chief resident, he went on to complete a residency in plastic surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine as the chief resident.

Dr. Rosen is board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery, and has made several presentations to the medical community. Currently, he serves as the chief of the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Monmouth.

John Taylor, M.D., FACS, FICS
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Monmouth Medical Center

John Taylor, M.D., FACS, FICS, received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He went on to complete both his residency in general surgery, and his residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Montefiore Medical Center.

Dr. Taylor has been an attending surgeon at Monmouth since 2002 and is board certified in surgery and plastic surgery. He specializes in general plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery, including microsurgery. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons, he served as a member of the executive council of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons.



Rudolf C. Thompson, M.D.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Monmouth Medical Center

Rudolf C. Thompson, M.D., received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. After completing a residency in general surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, he went on to complete a residency in plastic surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Board certified in general surgery and plastic surgery, Dr. Thompson is an attending surgeon at Monmouth. A member of the American College of Surgeons Candidate Group, he has published several articles and has delivered multiple presentations to the medical community.



Alan Zaccaria, M.D., FACS
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Monmouth Medical Center

Alan Zaccaria, M.D., FACS, received his medical degree from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. After completing his residency in general surgery as the chief resident at Monmouth Medical, he went on to complete a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery as the chief resident at the University of Illinois.

An attending surgeon at Monmouth since 1993, Dr. Zaccaria has been working with the Jacqueline Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center since 1995, and has been the Breast Center’s plastic surgery coordinator for the past two years. He has published many articles in his field of expertise and has delivered multiple presentations to the medical community.

From 2002 to 2004, he served as President of the Monmouth County Medical Society and was a membership committee member in 1999 for the Society of Surgeons.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Zaccaria is an active member of many professional medical organizations including the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is a medical columnist for the Atlantic Highlands Herald, and since 1995 he has been a medicolegal expert.

A diplomate of the National Board of Examiners, the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Zaccaria received the John C. Borden Memorial Surgery Award for surgical excellence.
