In its most
definitive study of Americans’ weight,
the centers for disease control
and prevention found that more than 120 Million people are obese or overweight— a
number that has risen sharply in recent years. Today, 61 percent of the United
States population is considered overweight or obese, according to the American
Obesity Society. Defined by the National Institutes of Health as being 100 or
more pounds over your ideal body weight*, morbid
obesity is not simply a disorder of will power. Physiologic, bio-chemical
and genetic evidence indicate that morbid obesity is a complex condition involving
family history as well as environmental, socioeconomic and psychological factors.
There are
several methods available for
the surgical treatment of obesity. At
Monmouth Medical Center, we specialize
in laparoscopic weight-loss surgery, including adjustable
gastric lap banding and the Roux-en-y
Gastric Bypass.
Perhaps no
other medical condition has been
more misunderstood, mistreated
or misrepresented than obesity.
But, at the Bariatric Surgery
Program at Monmouth Medical Center,
we make a long-term commitment
to our patients’ health
and guide you from pre-surgery
consultation and testing through
surgery, recovery and continuing
support. However, it is important
to understand that surgical treatment
is considered only when other
methods have failed. The surgery
itself is only a tool to get
your body started losing weight
- complying with diet and behavior
modifications required by most
surgeons would determine your
ultimate success. Thus, it is
equally important that our patients
make a long-term commitment to
their health and the program.
Surgery
should not be considered until
you and your doctor have evaluated
all other options. As with all
surgeries, there are risks associated
with this procedure. Your doctor
must determine if you are an
appropriate surgical candidate.
The Bariatric Surgery Program
at Monmouth Medical Center is
New Jersey’s premier comprehensive
program for laparoscopic weight-loss
surgery -- designed to help you
achieve sustained weight loss
and optimal health. The Bariatric
Surgery Program provides advanced
surgical techniques in minimally
invasive surgery for patients
with morbid obesity.
Frank
Borao, MD, FACS, medical
director of the bariatric surgery
program and chief of laparoscopic
surgery at Monmouth Medical Center
is board certified and fellowship

surgery and has been a pioneer
in weight loss surgery in New Jersey.
As a leader in the field, he has
since trained many other surgeons
throughout the state in bariatric
laparoscopic techniques.
