Drs. Frank Borao and Steven Binenbaum, both board certified and fellowship-trained laparoscopic weight loss surgeons, are here to help you choose the procedure that is best for you as an individual. For more than ten years, our program has helped hundreds of patients achieve their goal.
Whether you choose the gastric adjustable band, sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, our surgeons and multidisciplinary team will provide ongoing clinical, nutritional and psychological support throughout your journey.
We believe that our commitment to improving your health through weight loss surgery is as strong as yours.
In its most definitive study of Americans’ weight, the centers
for disease control and prevention found that more than 120 Million
people are obese or overweight— a
number that has risen sharply in recent years. Today, 61 percent of the United
States population is considered overweight or obese, according to the American
Obesity Society. Defined by the National Institutes of Health as being 100 or
more pounds over your ideal body weight*, morbid
obesity is not simply a disorder of will power. Physiologic, bio-chemical
and genetic evidence indicate that morbid obesity is a complex condition involving
family history as well as environmental, socioeconomic and psychological factors.
There are several methods available for the surgical treatment
of obesity. At Monmouth Medical Center, we specialize in
laparoscopic weight-loss surgery, including laparoscopic gastric band, laparoscopic Roux-en-y
gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Perhaps no other medical condition has been more misunderstood,
mistreated or misrepresented than obesity. But, at The Weight Loss
Institute of New Jersey at Monmouth Medical Center, we make a long-term
commitment to our patients’ health and guide you from pre-surgery
consultation and testing through surgery, recovery and continuing support.
However, it is important to understand that surgical treatment
is considered only when other methods have failed. The surgery
itself is only a tool to get your body started losing weight -
complying with diet and behavior modifications required by most
surgeons would determine your ultimate success. Thus, it is equally
important that our patients make a long-term commitment to their
health and the program.
The Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey at Monmouth Medical
Center is New Jersey’s premier comprehensive program for
laparoscopic weight-loss surgery -- designed to help you achieve
sustained weight loss and optimal health. The Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey at Monmouth Medical Center provides advanced surgical techniques in minimally invasive
surgery for patients with morbid obesity.
The multidisciplinary team members have created a pathway that all patients must take to be compliant with the program. This pathway includes the following:
- In this one hour educational session with the Program Director, you will learn about the differences between an “open surgical procedure” and a laparoscopic procedure
- The risks and benefits of the adjustable gastric band, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- The required testing before your surgery
- The post-operative course for each procedure
- The required follow up visits
- What to do if you experience a complication
- You will meet with your surgeon, a brief history is taken, and a procedure is discussed that will be tailored to your lifestyle
- You will meet with our psychologist to discuss your feelings about weight loss and your ability to understand and cope with the changes that are ahead of you
- You will also meet with him again before and after your surgery to help you emotionally move through your journey
- You will meet with our dietitian to discuss your present eating behaviors and what will be expected before and after your surgery
- You will also meet with her before your surgery to help you to prepare for your post-operative required diet and vitamin regime, as well as after your surgery to assist you with your continual dietary requirements
Additionally, you will be requested to attend 2 monthly support group meetings before your surgery. These meetings are run by the multidisciplinary team members and usually consist of between 20 to 40 people who are either getting ready for surgery or who have already had the surgery. You will meet people who are facing the same fears/ issues that you may have and will also be able to support you through your weight loss journey.
