Pathway to Surgery

Preparing for Weight Loss Surgery

Before Surgery

The Screening Process

Weight loss surgery is not the right choice for everyone. The screening process helps our team to determine if you meet the criteria and which procedure fits your lifestyle.

During your initial consult you will meet with the Program Director or a designated Registered Nurse from the Weight Loss center for an hour educational session. This session will provide you with information about the different surgical procedures that our surgeons perform and discuss how our multidisciplinary team is here to support you through your journey.

During the initial consult, your surgeon will thoroughly review your history with you and perform a brief physical.  Together you will discuss and decide which surgical procedure will be the best for you.  During this visit the surgeon will also discuss any and all testing that will be required before your surgery.

You will meet with our dedicated Clinical Psychologist, who will help you identify any emotional issues that may prevent your weight loss success and will provide on-going support throughout this process, either individually or during the support group meetings.

Our dedicated Registered Dietitian is an integral part of our multidisciplinary team.  She will do an initial consult to evaluate your present eating habits and help you to set goals to develop new eating behaviors.  She will be a continual resource and support for you before, during and after your surgery.

Our insurance resource assistant is also available to help you to understand the requirements set forth by your insurance company to qualify for the surgical procedure.

At the conclusion of your visit, you will have obtained all of the educational information, and prescriptions you will need to start process towards a goal of receiving your surgical weight loss procedure.

Together we create an on-going resourceful and supportive team available to all of our patients to help you achieve your long term weight loss success.

What can I do to prepare for surgery?
Weight loss surgery is like other major abdominal surgery. You can best prepare by knowing the benefits and risks of surgery, and by closely following your doctor's instructions.

  • Understand the surgical process and what to expect afterward.
  • Keep in mind that you’ll never be able to eat the way you did before, and that you’ll have to watch what and how you eat for the rest of your life.
  • Talk to people who have had weight loss surgery.
  • Write down your reasons for having weight loss surgery and outline your plans to maintain your weight loss after surgery.
  • Practice the post-op diet, including the transition from an all-liquid diet, to pureed food, to a normal diet of smaller portions with 4 ounces of protein.
  • Start a journal. Record how you feel now, the challenges you face, and the things you hope to be able to do after Weight Loss surgery.
  • Ask your family and friends for their support. Talk to them about why you want to have weight loss surgery. It helps to have people behind you, waiting to help.

How can I deal with my fear of surgery?
The fear of surgery is not irrational or abnormal; in fact, it’s very common. Weight loss surgery creates a smaller stomach pouch and, depending on the procedure, may shorten the digestive tract—all while the patient is under general anesthesia. If you have concerns, consider the following: concerns and fears with your surgeon.

And remember, you’ll have a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to your best possible care.
