The fourth year resident is called the "Senior Resident" and
serves as the Chief Resident's key ally. At this point, you
should be certain that you will be happy and comfortable
in general surgery or will proceed to one of the subspecialties
such as vascular, colorectal, pediatric, oncologic, cardiothoracic
or plastic and reconstructive surgery. There are certain
subspecialties that do not require five years of general
surgery prior to fellowship. It is up to you to research
these details and ask all the questions necessary to make
decisions.
The resident will rotate between MMC and NBIMC. He/she
will also spend two months at the Jersey Shore Regional
Trauma Center. The resident will have total immersion in
trauma and gain significant experience. In all the rotations,
advanced surgical judgment and technical skills will be
developed.
