Pediatric surgeon I. Thomas Cohen, M.D., who
has more than 30 years experience as a pediatric
surgeon in academic practice, joins The Children's
Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center from the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/New
Jersey Medical School, Newark, where he served
as chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery.
Prior to that, he served as chief of the division
of pediatric surgery at Albany Medical College.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons,
the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, United
Kingdom, and the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Canada. He also is a diplomate
of the American Board of Nutrition and holds
specialist status in clinical nutrition.
He trained in general surgery at Johannesburg
General Hospital and University of the Witwatersrand
in South Africa and completed specialty rotations
at Hammersmith Hospital and Royal Postgraduate
Medical School, London, and St. Peter’s
Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, United Kingdom. He
completed a pediatric surgical fellowship at
Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital
and University of Cape Town and Transvaal Memorial
Hospital for Children and University of the Witwatersrand.
He is fellowship trained in pediatric surgical
oncology from the Children’s Hospital of
Los Angeles and University of Southern California.
His professional affiliations include the American
Academy of Pediatrics, where he is a surgical
fellow and a member of the section on oncology/hematology,
and the American College of Nutrition, where
he also holds fellowship status. His research
interests include pediatric surgical oncology,
pediatric nutrition, nutrition and cancer, neonatal
necrotizing enterocolitis and embryology/anatomy
of the ductus venosus.
At Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Cohen serves
as Chairman of Surgery for the Children’s
Hospital and is expanding the service as a full-time
pediatric surgeon, with an office located on
the ground floor of the Maysie Stroock Pavilion
in Suite ST021. He provides inpatient and emergency
department pediatric surgery consultations, and
as section chief, he also will direct and develop
the Pediatric Surgery Division, including the
general program and educational program for residents
and students at The Children’s Hospital
at Monmouth Medical Center.
Dr. Cohen, in collaboration with surgeon Frank
Borao, M.D., the medical director of The Center
for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Monmouth Medical
Center, is able to provide various laparoscopic
and thoracoscopic procedures in infants and children,
including cholecystotomy (gall bladder surgery),
splenectomy (removal of the spleen), gastro-esophageal
reflux surgery (anti-reflux surgery) and diagnostic
procedures. He also brings to Monmouth a minimally
invasive treatment option for pectus excavatum
(funnel chest), as he received specialty training
in the Nuss procedure, considered the state-of-the-art
surgical care for these patients.
Dr. Cohen specializes in abdominal, non-cardiac
thoracic and head and neck surgeries. He is
highly trained and experienced in the diagnosis,
treatment and management of children’s
surgical needs, including:
• Surgical repair of birth defects, including a minimally invasive treatment
option for pectus excavatum.
• Evaluation and management of acute abdominal pain.
• Serious injuries that require surgery or non-operative management.
• Diagnosis and surgical care of solid tumors.
• Endoscopic procedures (bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy and removal of foreign
bodies).
• All other surgical procedures for children,
including hernia and hydroceles (backup of fluid
in a testicle) repairs and orchidopexy (surgical
repair of undescended

Michael H. Fleisher, M.D., received his medical
degree from SUNY-Downstate Medical Center College
of Medicine. He completed his residency in general
surgery at the Yale-New Haven Hospital and then
returned to SUNY-Downstate Medical Center to
complete a residency in urology. He was a clinical
fellow in renal transplant at the Montefiore
Hospital and Medical Center, and a clinical fellow
in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick
Children in Toronto.
Board certified in urology, Dr. Fleisher has
been an attending surgeon at Monmouth for the
past sixteen years. A member of numerous professional
medical organizations including the Society for
Pediatric Urology, and the Academy of Medicine
of New Jersey, Dr. Fleisher has published articles
in the field of urology.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons
and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Fleisher
was honored with the Sergio Award in 1999 for
the ‘Healing the Children’ program.

Thomas S. Vates III, M.D., received his medical
degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine
and completed his residency in general surgery
at both UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. After completing
his residency in urology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School, he went on to complete
a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Children’s
Hospital of Michigan.
A fellow of both the American College of Surgeons
and the American Academy of Pediatrcs, Dr. Vates
has published many original articles and abstracts
in his field. He is a member of the Sigma Xi
society and the Society of Fetal Urology. Among
his special honors and achievements, he received
the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award in 1996,
and received second place honors at the 1997
clinical research competition sponsored by the
section of Urology of the American Academy of
Pediatrics. In 2003 he was honored with the Sergio
Award from Healing the Children Midlantic.

Michael Andrew Tavill, M.D., received his medical
degree from the Case Western Reserve University
School of Medicine and completed his residency
as the chief resident in otorhinolaryngology
at the Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania.
He completed a fellowship at the Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia in the division of pediatric
otolaryngology.
Board certified in otolaryngology, Dr. Tavill
has published articles and abstracts in the field
of otolaryngology and has made many local and
national presentations. An attending surgeon
at Monmouth Medical Center since 1997, Dr. Tavill
is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society
and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
His affiliations include the Society of Ear,
Nose, and Throat Advances in Children and the
American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology Head
and Neck Surgery.
