When should my child stop
feeding prior to surgery?
As a rule all patients scheduled for
elective surgery must not eat or drink anything after
midnight the evening before surgery. However, for infants
and young children this might be difficult. Listed below
are the "Pediatric Fasting" policies for Monmouth
Medical Center. Please review and adhere to these policies
as they apply to your specific situation. If a child is
fed inappropriately the surgery will be cancelled.
Monmouth Medical Center - Children may have clear liquids
up to 3 hours prior to surgery according to the following

When is my child's surgery? Where does
my child go?
Who will tell me this information?
If your child is scheduled for surgery at Monmouth Medical
Center you should call the hospital
(732-923-7830) between 2:00-4:00 pm the day before your
child's surgery so that you can be told when and where
to be on the morning of surgery. If your child is scheduled
for surgery on Monday then call the hospital on Friday
before the weekend. If you call your physician's office
after 5:00 pm you will be put in contact with the physician
on-call but he/she will not be able to answer your questions
regarding surgical scheduling.
Finally, it is important for you to
keep in mind more than one child is usually scheduled
for surgery on a particular day if you arrive late your
child's surgery probably will have to be rescheduled.
Traditionally the order of the cases is youngest to oldest,
but sometimes this is not always the case. There may be
child with special needs or that requires certain medications
that may alter the order. Think of the surgery time as
similar to an airline flight. Arrive early and there may
be an occasional delay.
