Preparing for your Surgery

As a surgical patient at Monmouth Medical Center, your care will be handled by a highly skilled team of specialists, which is headed by your surgeon. The information in this section is designed to give you step-by-step information to prepare you for surgery and recovery.

Before Your Surgery

Adult Patients
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before the day of your surgery. You may brush your teeth (do not be concerned if you swallow a small amount of water). Please take your morning medications with a small amount of water before coming for the procedure unless advised otherwise by the nurse or doctor. If you eat or add cream to your beverage, your surgery will be cancelled.

Abstain from smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before your surgery.

For Infants/Children
Infants 3 months of age to older children can drink clear liquids such as water, apple or cranberry juice up to two hours before their surgery. (No cream, no milk and no juice with pulp).
Please follow these guidelines:

3 months to 1 year of age 2 oz. clear liquid
1 to 4 years of age 3 oz. clear liquid
4 to 12 years of age 8 oz. clear liquid

For Nursing Infants
Babies may be nursed up to three hours before arrival time. Formula can be given up to five hours before arrival time.

What to Bring

You may bring eyeglasses, false teeth and case, and slippers. Young children may bring a favorite toy or blanket. You should bring an empty bottle for your infant or toddler.

Please do not bring valuables, such as jewelry and money, as Monmouth Medical center is not liable for the safekeeping of these items.

You should not bring medications from home unless ordered by your physician. Please do not wear contact lenses, false eyelashes or nail polish.
