Preparing for your Surgery

As a surgical patient at Monmouth Medical Center, your care will be handled by a highly skilled team of specialists, which is headed by your surgeon. The information in this section is designed to give you step-by-step information to prepare you for surgery and recovery.

Surgical Day Stay Center

After you leave the PACU, you will be transported to the surgical Day Stay Center, where you will be allowed to rest for as long as necessary. Patients who are able to eat or drink will receive juice or soda and crackers. Most Day Surgery patients are able to go home within two hours after they return from the PACU.

You will need assistance to get out of bed for the first time. Unless your doctor orders complete bed rest, the sooner you move around after surgery, the quicker your recovery will be.

Your doctor will explain the care you will require after discharge. This may include medications, diet limitations, exercise or other therapy that will speed the healing process. Although it is not necessary to have someone accompany you on arrival, a responsible adult must accompany you upon discharge.

A surgical waiting area with a public telephone and complimentary coffee is available for visitors on the surgical floor. A member of the surgical team will speak to your visitors in the waiting area after your operation and will notify them when you are transferred from the PACU.

Upon Returning Home

During the first 24 hours following your discharge from the hospital, you should not drive or operate machinery, and you should abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages. If you experience dizziness, it is important to sit or lie down. Avoid making critical decisions. Ask for assistance when getting out of bed and walking down stairs. Do not take any medication unless it is prescribed by your doctor.

If you feel that your recovery is not proceeding normally, call your doctor immediately.
