On December 6, the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) convened in Secaucus with specialists from throughout the state represented surgical specialties, including vascular, cardiothoracic, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive, bariatric, neurosurgery, orthopedic, trauma, colorectal, and general surgery, to discuss hot topics in surgery. The event also featured a
room dedicated to the “up and coming surgeon,” that held the surgical resident research competition and presentation, and the Surgical Jeopardy competition.
The Surgical Jeopardy competition pitted teams from the surgical residency programs in New Jersey as well as the Easton, PA program, and consisted of one chief resident and two other residents from each program. Representing the Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) Surgical Residency program were 5th year resident Dr. Sotero Peralta, 4th year resident Dr. Jack Needham, and 3rd year resident Dr. Jonas Mansson. After three rounds of competition,
the MMC team garnered top honors by defeating Easton and Robert Wood Johnson in final jeopardy. First place included a trophy, a $1,000 honorarium for MMC’s Department of Surgery, and the privilege of representing New Jersey in the Surgical Jeopardy competition at the National ACS meeting in 2009.
Following Surgical Jeopardy, presentations from the surgical resident research competition commenced with only the top four winning papers, including three presentations by MMC residents. MMC’s presentations included: Waiting Until the Morning: A Community Hospital's Experience in Treating Pediatric Appendicitis by Drs. Christie Bialowas and Samir Shah, Causes of Bleeding in Minimally Invasive Surgery by Dr. Jack Needham, and Clinical Algorithm for C- Spine Clearance in Blunt Trauma including Evaluation of the Obtunded Patient by Dr. Aaron Capuano.
MMC’s Surgical Residency training program is well known for graduating excellent surgeons many of whom have elected to stay at the scenic Jersey shore region and serve the community. The program is proud of the accomplishments of its representatives at the ACS-NJ meeting, congratulates them on their fine performance, and wishes them luck at next year’s meeting.
