Thoracic Surgeon Medical Director, Lung Cancer Program,
Leon Hess Cancer Center
Thoracic surgeon Lourens J. Willekes II, M.D., earned his medical
degree from the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City.
He completed his general surgery residency at Morristown Memorial
Hospital and then trained in cardiothoracic surgery at Albany Medical
Center in New York. Prior to joining Monmouth Medical Center, he
was an associate with West Houston Cardiovascular Associates in
Houston. He holds board certification from the American Board of
Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
At Monmouth, he serves as Director of the Lung Cancer Program
of the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth. The Lung Cancer Program
offers an advanced array of state-of-the-art diagnostic, treatment
and rehabilitative services, provided in one convenient location.
Through the program, a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals
evaluates patients who have been diagnosed with lung cancer and
those who have symptoms, providing patients and families with the
care they need in a comfortable and supportive setting. Dr. Willekes
performs a host of complex thoracic surgical procedures such as
esophageal surgery including surgical resection of esophageal malignancy,
treatment for achalasia and other motor disorders of the esophagus,
complex lung cancer resections, interventional bronchoscopic techniques
for tracheal and bronchial pathology and minimally invasive thoracic
procedures (VATS). Dr. Willekes is also one of a select group of
thoracic surgeons in New Jersey to use the da Vinci Surgical System — an
advanced robotic platform that allows surgeons to perform technically
demanding surgeries using a minimally invasive approach.
